A Fairer, Greener Scotland

The Scottish Government recently published its Programme for Government 2021-2022, which includes plans that will be of interest to the community food sector.

‘Land of opportunity’ plans to take steps to end the need for food banks in Scotland as a primary response; plans to roll out Food For Life across more primary schools and early years settings; the expansion of free school lunches to all primary school children; and the continuation of the Best Start programme including Best Start foods.

The Economy section includes plans to introduce the Good Food Nation Bill this coming year, which will also see the re-establishment of a ministerial working group on food, and will place duties on Ministers and certain public authorities.

It also includes support for community food growing and ensuring that Scottish, healthy, fresh produce is available closer to where people live, particularly in Scotland’s low-income communities.

The Programme can be found on the Scottish Government website.
