Online

This session will include:

  • A short introduction to what prevention can look like in community food settings and how it might be evaluated
  • Breakout discussions where you can share your own experiences, challenges, and ideas in smaller groups
  • Facilitator reflections and an opportunity for further group discussion

What is this peer session about?

Community food initiatives play a vital preventative role by helping people build social connections, develop skills, link to other services and avoid reaching crisis point. As pressures on communities continue to rise, the preventative role played by local food projects has never been more important.

Prevention is a central theme in both the Population Health Framework and Public Health Scotland’s ten‑year strategy Together We Can,  which call for a shift towards early action and supporting people long before they reach crisis.

However, many practitioners tell us that it can be difficult to describe this preventative impact, let alone measure it.

This month Evaluation Support Scotland (ESS) ran an Evaluating Prevention workshop for us to deepen our own understanding of how prevention works in a community food context. ESS offers a range of helpful resources that explore prevention in practice, available on their website.

We’d now like to give you a taste of what we learnt and provide space for you to discuss this with your peers.

Who are the peer sessions for?

These peer sessions are designed for volunteers or staff working in or alongside community food initiatives.  We aim to provide a friendly, small‑group space for discussing current issues, sharing practice, and connecting with peers.

Attendance is limited to ensure there’s time for everyone to contribute. Please book one space per organisation. You’re welcome to attend as a one‑off or join future sessions as we advertise these.

Peer learning session registration.
